August 4 AM recall roundup - Darling-Pasch debate, headlines, commentary

WisPolitics: Darling, Pasch meet in final debate before recall election

State Sen. Alberta Darling said Wednesday that she's being recalled from office because the entire country is focused on Wisconsin politics and their affect on President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

"This is about the Obama election," said Darling. "Obama cannot win unless he wins Wisconsin. That's why you see all this money in here. That's why you see all the arrows and guns pointed at me. Because we had the audacity to take on the special interest groups and say, you know what? We are Wisconsin and we will stand up for the people and we'll stand up for the elections that said, 'get control of the spending and the debt and your deficit and put us on the right track to grow jobs.' We did it and for that, they're trying to take us out."

Darling, R-River Hills, and Rep. Sandy Pasch, D-Whitefish Bay, met for a debate at the Radisson Hotel in Menomonee Falls. The event, sponsored by the Menomonee Falls Rotary Club, was moderated by Charles Benson of WTMJ-Channel 4.

Pasch focused her comments on what she repeatedly said has been Darling's failure to listen to constituents, particularly the voices of children, the elderly and disabled.

"Fifty percent of the people in the state of Wisconsin have no voice," said Pasch, who accused Darling of failing to fight hard enough to prevent deep cuts to education, caps on Family Care services for the frail elderly and disabled, and threats to transportation.

"Senator Darling is unwilling to talk about her own record, about her own role in dividing the state and gutting education and making health care much less available to people across the area, increasing the voucher program and taking away accountability for that, including increasing background checks for teachers," said Pasch.
