Darling: 'I plan on winning this election'
At 8:40, Alberta Darling stepped up to the podium. Wearing a vivid blue suit and white blouse, a smiling Darling announced, "I plan on winning this election and continuing to work for you." Darling introduced her husband, Bill, her daughter Liza Winkeljohn and grandchildren Charlie and Andie.
She also called up Republican lawmakers in attendance: Leah Vukmir, Jim Sensenbrenner, Dan Knodl, Jim Ott and Pat Strachota.
By now, more than 200 people had filled the banquet room, and they applauded when Darling said, "I am being recalled because we balanced a $3.6 billion deficit without raising taxes. Today and yesterday, we learned that the city of Milwaukee is saving between 30 and 36 million dollars because we gave them the tools they need," Darling said, and the crowd got to its feet.
After telling the crowd that the "story" behind the recall is powerful unions who vowed to "take us out," Darling said, "I want to tell you, there's a lot of bullying, a lot of threats. Leah and I and Congressman Sensenbrenner had a major death threat but we said, we don't care, we're going to stand up for Wisconsin."
