Hovde announces U.S. Senate run

Madison hedge fund manager Eric Hovde announced his bid for the U.S. Senate Thursday at a small manufacturing plant in Dane County, saying now is the time for "citizen legislators" to tackle the nation's debt and economic woes.

Speaking at Dane Manufacturing in the town of Dane, Hovde introduced himself as a "community banker" who was compelled to enter the race because of the "moral crisis" of the nation's growing debt. He lamented the growing role of government in the national economy and "crony capitalism" that brought about the bailout of major investment banks in 2008 and 2009.

"We need leaders in Washington who understand our financial problems and who won't be bought off by special interests," Hovde said. "We need citizen legislators who've spent time in the private sector and will put people back to work."

Hovde also struck out at Congress and President Barack Obama for bringing about a "European Socialist Economy" in America.

"Right now, if you roll in the federal government, state and local governments, 39 percent of our economy are being absorbed by the government," Hovde said.

When asked whether he felt he had a shot given entering late against established candidates, he said the state was tired of "career politicians" and were looking for a fresh private sector perspective. He didn't answer a question about how much of his own money he'd spend on the race.

"I plan to have everybody contribute and I'm going to make a commitment, but my race is not about how much money I spend," Hovde said.

Hovde will make additional stops throughout the state today and tomorrow to announce his candidacy.
