Romney warns second Obama term a threat to economic, religious freedom, military might

MILWAUKEE -- Mitt Romney charged Monday a second term for President Obama would be a threat to economic and religious freedom as well as America’s military might.

Meeting with supporters at a town hall meeting, offered himself up as the only candidate able to stand in the way of Obama's re-election.

“This is a question about what America we will leave to our kids,” Romney said.

Romney also reminded the crowd Obama said if he wasn’t able to turn the economy around in three years, “he would be looking at a one-term proposition.”

“We are looking to collect on that,” he said.

Romney and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Janesville, were especially critical of the President's economic policies. In his opening remarks, Ryan accused the president of trying to create a European-style welfare state, a move which he said would create a similar type of crisis to that now seen in Greece.

“The president likes to think he can micromanage every aspect of our economy from Washington,” Ryan said. “It's not entrepreneurial capitalism, it is crony capitalism.”

Romney said he was also concerned with the president's recent mandate that requires employers to provide contraceptive services, saying it illustrates a lack of commitment to religious freedom.

“There is in this country a war on religion. There is a desire to establish in this country a religion called secularism,” Romney said.

Romney tied the mandate into the larger debate regarding healthcare, again saying the policy will drain citizens of their freedoms.

“Where Obamacare leads is not only what insurance you can have but what treatment you can have ... and I will stop Obamacare in its tracks.”

Romney repeatedly stressed the importance of avoiding a second term of the Obama presidency. He said that considering the “drastic” policy moves the President has made during an election year, giving him a second term without having to worry about facing the voters again could lead to an even greater departure from “founding market principles.”
