Cain stumps for Thompson
Tommy Thompson won the endorsement of former presidential candidate Herman Cain today as the two campaigned together in Green Bay and Waukesha.
At a GOP office in Waukesha, the both praised Mitt Romney's choice for VP, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, while Thompson said electing him to the Senate would help Romney and Ryan implement their agenda. Cain said he was “ecstatic” at the news of the Ryan announcement.
“It says a lot about Romney's leadership,” Cain said. “He selected someone that would complement his leadership experiences. That's what you need when you have a big job.”
He said Romney and Ryan would renew America, restructure government programs and repeal “Obamacare” and “burdensome regulations.”
“That's why I'm excited about sending Gov. Thompson to Washington, D.C.,” Cain said. “To help them restructure stuff the right way.”
Cain quipped that he asked why Thompson, 70, doesn't just go fishing. “Saving America is my fishing,” Cain quoted Thompson as saying.
“I've could have gone fishing, also,” Cain said. “But like Tommy, saving this nation is my fishing, is his fishing, for the time being.”
Thompson said Romney's choice in Ryan shows he “is going to on the big issues facing America.”
“He's not going to duck it,” Thompson said. “And Paul Ryan is going to give him the inspiration and help him frame answers to the major problems of America, and that's when I really got excited.”
Thompson said Republican have to take the Senate if Romney and Ryan are going to be successful in implementing their agenda, and he positioned himself as the one who can win in November.
“We will not pick up 50 seats without Wisconsin, and I am the candidate, ladies and gentlemen, that can win,” he said to loud applause.
He noted that none of his opponents have won statewide, while he has one five times.
“I've been able to bring the Reagan Democrats and the independents over,” Thompson said. “I can do it again.”
