PPP: Hovde 27, Thompson 25, Neumann 24, Fitzgerald 15
The newest poll from Dem firm Public Policy Polling shows Madison banker Eric Hovde ahead of the pack in the GOP U.S. Senate field, but rivals Tommy Thompson and Mark Neumann well within the margin of error.
The survey of 557 likely GOP primary voters saw Hovde favored by 27 percent of respondents, with Thompson at 25 percent and Neumann at 24 percent. Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, R-Horicon, came in at 15 percent.
The poll, taken on Aug. 8 and 9, had a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.2 percentage points.
A PPP poll released last week had Hovde at 28 percent, Thompson and Neumann at 25 percent each, and Fitzgerald at 13 percent.
Of the 9 percent of respondents in the newest poll who say they're undecided, Thompson is the only one of the four with a net negative approval rating. Thirty-five percent view him favorably compared to 38 percent who have a negative opinion of him. The split for the others among undecideds are 41-13 for Fitzgerald, 39-22 for Hovde and 42-22 for Neumann.
