State Dems call on Thompson to fire aide
The state Democratic Party is calling on GOP Senate candidate Tommy Thompson to fire a campaign aide over a controversial email sent last week.
"This was a test, and Tommy Thompson failed the test," DPW Chairman Mike Tate said in a conference call with reporters today.
Brian Nemoir, a senior adviser with the Thompson campaign, sent the email before Dem opponent Tammy Baldwin addressed last week's Democratic National Convention; it included a video of the Madison congresswoman dancing at a gay pride event. If elected, Baldwin would be the first openly gay U.S. senator.
Thompson said earlier this week he thought the email was a mistake and that Nemoir had moved to a different role with the campaign.
Tate, however, disputed that claim, charging that Nemoir is still sending campaign emails as a senior adviser and that Thompson was attempting to mislead voters and the media.
"Thompson should start telling the truth, and show Brian Nemoir the door," Tate said.
Thompson's campaign responded that Dems' "desperation knows no bounds."
"They will do anything they can to divert Wisconsin voters' attention away from Tammy Baldwin's failed liberal record," said Thompson spokeswoman Lisa Boothe. "Baldwin and her out-of-touch cronies are doing everything they can to keep Wisconsin families from knowing that almost 6.6 million Americans have lost their jobs since she took office and that the national debt has increased by $10 trillion under her watch."
