Insiders: Margin in Fox Valley counties key to tonight's presidential results

Insiders will be looking for clues to how the election is going by looking at key counties tonight.

The margin in the Fox Valley will be key. Barack Obama won 54.5 percent of the vote in Brown, Outagamie and Winnebago counties four years ago. Gov. Scott Walker won 59.1 percent of the vote in those three in the June recall. Insiders say Mitt Romney doesn't need to hit Walker's numbers to win the state. But if he ends up with just a narrow edge there, it will not bode well for him statewide.

Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties are considered good measures of GOP intensity. Walker won the three by a combined 151,962 in the June recall election.

Dane and Milwaukee counties will be good measures of Dem intensity; Obama won them by a combined 303,293 votes in 2008.

And insiders will be watching to see if western Wisconsin snaps back for Dems. Walker won Eau Claire County in the June recall while losing La Crosse County by a little more than 2,000 votes. Obama won both by 27,010 votes in 2008.
