Normal Election Day so far

Election officials and observers say today has gone smoothly for the most part with the occasional hiccup due to broken or jammed voter machines and other issues that typically pop up.

"Machine issues are the story of the day," said GAB Director Kevin Kennedy. "We push a lot of paper through, and these machines are old."

Long lines were reported this morning at some polling sites, particularly in Milwaukee. Kennedy said there was also one report of a poll worker mistakenly asking for a photo ID from someone registering at the polls.

But he said the day has been fairly normal for a heavy turnout election. He also said there have been few problems with poll watchers.

Kennedy said the chief election officials at local wards have been good at keeping order when faced with any groundless challenges to voters or an insistence on seeing proof of residency documents, which they are not allowed to do.

"They were dealt with exactly how they were supposed to," Kennedy said. "A couple of people got overly aggressive and told that’s it. You’re done."

Dan Hunt, who was active in last year's recall attempt of Dem Sen. Bob Wirch and has worked with poll watchers ahead of today's election, said some observers were put too far away from voters initiallyy. But those issues have been resolved and there have been few problems.

Ann Jacobs with the legal coordinating committee of Wisconsin Election Protection said there has been a "low-level pattern of observer activity that was disruptive at some polling sites." But she said election officials have done a good job of keeping order.
