Cruz mailers rap Kasich as new poll shows race could be tightening

Recent Ted Cruz mailers in Wisconsin are attacking John Kasich  on a variety of fronts before Tuesday's election as the Texas senator tries to prevent the Ohio governor from gaining too much of the anti-Donald Trump vote.

Three Cruz for President mailers obtained by WisPolitics.com charge:

--"John Kasich puts our military at risk";
--for "the Clinton-Kasich gun ban deal";
--and "John Kasich: just another career politician ... Kasich takes care of his cronies, not workers."

Kasich didn't directly address those charges, but in a weekend interview with ABC-TV he laughed off attacks from Cruz' super PAC, which is running a 30-second ad titled "Kasich Won't Play" that accuses the Ohio governor of having a "liberal record."

"It's what you put up with in a campaign and of course that distorts virtually everything," Kasich said. "I've spoken out. I've said what I want to say, but frankly, I'm interested in talking about my record of job growth, of creating security for people in the workplace, getting better wages and making sure our kids have a better future and a better tomorrow."

A new CBS poll released Sunday showed Cruz with 43 percent, Trump with 37 percent and Kasich with 18 percent.  In the Democratic race, Bernie Sanders had 49 percent support from poll respondents, compared to 47 percent for Hillary Clinton.

The poll surveyed more than 1,500 registered voters Tuesday through Friday.
