Emerson poll has Sanders, Cruz leading

A new poll out today from the Emerson College Polling Society has Bernie Sanders leading Hillary Clinton by 8 percentage points after finding him behind by 6 points two weeks ago.

The survey also had Ted Cruz leading Donald Trump 40 percent to 35 percent. Two weeks ago, it was Cruz 36, Trump 35.

Wisconsin’s GOP 42 delegates will be divided up two ways. The winner of the statewide results will receive 18 delegates, while the victor in each of the state’s eight congressional districts receive three delegates.

The poll found Cruz ahead in five of the districts, Trump led 49-24 in the 3rd CD that covers western Wisconsin, and the 2nd and 4th CDs were toss ups for the three GOP candidates.

On the Dem side, Sanders led Clinton 51-43 compared to being down 50-44 previously.

The poll also asked about the general election, finding Clinton up on Trump 47-37 and Cruz 46-43. It found John Kasich leading Clinton 53-28.

The poll also found Sanders leading Trump 51-37 and Cruz 50-41. The polling summary did not include a head-to-head with Kasich and Sanders.

Looking at the U.S. Senate race this fall, the poll found 48 percent of likely general election voters backed Dem Russ Feingold, while 44 percent supported U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Oshkosh.

The automated telephone poll was conducted Wednesday through Sunday over landlines only. The general election sample included 1,198 likely voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points. The GOP questions included 549 likely primary voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points, while the Dem questions included 542 likely primary voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

The general election questions were weighted by the 2012 federal general election returns, while the Dem primary questions were weighted by age. The GOP primary results were not weighted.
