GAB still evaluating effect of server outages on early voting

The liberal One Wisconsin Now is calling for expanded voting hours after the state’s servers went down this morning.

But the Government Accountability Board says it has no plans at the moment to file a court order seeking an expansion of voting hours.

The outages happened around 8:45 a.m. due to an internal hardware problem, but the system was up and running again later in the morning, said Department of Administration spokesman Jim Dick. It affected all state agency websites hosted by the DOA’s Division of Enterprise Technology.

The outage likely caused delays on the last day of early voting and led to people having difficulties in getting state IDs at the Division of Motor Vehicles, the GAB said. The agency said several of its election applications, such as its electronic voter registration website, weren’t working earlier today.

That led One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross to say there’s a “simple solution to this cataclysmic failure.” Gov. Scott Walker’s administration, Ross said, should let local clerks open up this weekend so people can vote. And Ross called for expanded hours at DMVs so people can get a voter ID. A handful of those offices across the state are open on weekends.

“The people of Wisconsin ought not have their right to vote endangered by the incompetence of Gov. Walker and his administration,” Ross said.

But Michael Haas, the GAB’s elections division administrator, said the agency hasn't determined whether it would seek a court order that would let early voting go beyond 7 tonight.

He also said some municipalities -- if they weren't already planning on doing so -- might choose to stay open until the 7 p.m. cut-off.

Haas said the agency is still trying to gauge the effect of the outages through talking with the largest municipalities in the state. It's also working with the state's Department of Justice on what a court order would look like.
