Clinton supporters line up to hear former president

MILWAUKEE -- At the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 494 on Milwaukee’s far southwestern city limits, about 250 Hillary supporters were lined up more than an hour before the event’s start to see former President Bill Clinton.

Many interviewed said they don’t think Donald Trump has the temperament to be president.

“It’s not true that all men talk like that,” said John Hawley, 59, on Kenosha, a longtime construction worker. Referring to Trump’s lewd comments about women that were released Friday, Hawley said, “It’s uncalled for, even if it’s behind closed doors. I’ve got boys, not daughters, but I wouldn’t want anyone talking about my wife like that.”

Louis Lapow, a retired physician from New Berlin, said he honestly believes Trump is mentally ill and in need of psychiatric care.

“He’s the one who should be in jail,” said Lapow, referring to Trump’s supporters often chanting "Lock her up" at rallies. “The things he was talking about were crimes against women.”

Many women interviewed said that Republicans in general are waging a “war against women.”

Charu Thapar of Germantown, who attended the event with her daughter, Rhea, 11, said local Republicans like Paul Ryan, Scott Walker and Ron Johnson are “weak” and showing a “double-standard” by criticizing Trump’s comments against women but not withdrawing their support for his candidacy. “I think deep down they don’t think women are equal,” she said, “and Trump is the extreme in that.”

“We’re from India, and Trump is mocked there,” Thapar added.
