Source: Ryan tells House Republicans to do 'what's best for you' when it comes to Trump

Speaker Paul Ryan advised fellow House Republicans today “you all need to do what’s best for you in your district” when it comes to Donald Trump, according to a source who was on a conference call today.

Ryan told GOP members he will not defend the GOP nominee or campaign with him over the next month. Instead, the source said Ryan, R-Janesville, told House Republicans his decisions will be driven by what’s best for them.

The source said Ryan indicated he is willing to endure political pressure to protect the GOP majority.

The conference call comes after Ryan said he was “sickened” by vulgar comments Trump made in 2005 that were released Friday. The speaker pulled an invitation for Trump to attend a rally in Walworth County over the weekend after the tape came to light.

Ryan has not said publicly if he still supports Trump.

On “CBS This Morning,” Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said, “I certainly hope Speaker Ryan keeps his word and his endorsement of Donald Trump.

Asked if Ryan continues to support Trump for president, spokesman Zack Roday said, "The speaker is going to spend the next month focused entirely on protecting our congressional majorities."

UPDATE: Following reports on the call, Trump tweeted, "Paul Ryan should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration and not waste his time on fighting Republican nominee."
